β€œTo assure every Newark City Schools student the opportunity to pursue and complete education after high school.”

High School

Since its founding, A Call to College has helped Newark seniors complete the financial aid application process and has leveraged that financial aid with Last Dollar Grants.  More than three decades later, the program now offers a comprehensive high school program that provides encouragement and assistance to students who seek educational opportunities beyond high school.

Events, services and programming offered:

  • College Information Night: NCS students and parents/guardians learn about the college process, along with a basic financial aid overview.
  • College Talk: Newark City School graduates currently in college return to the high school to offer advice and information about their college experiences to the NHS junior and senior classes during small group sessions.
  • Free ACT Test and Prep: In 2007, A Call to College began providing resources and workshops to help interested NCS juniors prepare for the ACT exam. With the implementation of state funded ACT testing in 2016, the program has expanded to encourage all interested NCS juniors and seniors to prepare for the ACT and to retake it at least once for free.
  • College Application Blitz: Representatives from higher education institutions around the state are invited to Newark High School to assist seniors with completing their admission applications and are encouraged to waive application fees. Student's may receive assistance applying to any college of their choice, essay help, and learn about local scholarship opportunities.
  • Complete Your FAFSA Workshop: Applying for financial aid to continue with education beyond high school can be confusing. During the Complete Your FAFSA Workshops at Newark High School, experts from colleges as well as A Call to College staff help students and parents complete and submit the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid without charge.
  • Campus Visits:  Visiting a college campus gives students valuable perspective when making a college choice. Opportunities are organized for juniors and seniors to take field trips to college campuses locally and out of county.
  • One-on-One Advising: Participating NCS juniors and seniors meet with a staff advisor to discuss post-secondary options, the steps involved in the college search process, application timelines, scholarship and financial aid opportunities including the Last Dollar Grant.
  • College Resource Center: Computer stations and reference books are available for student and family use in the A Call to College office in 242G.
  • Start Your Story: In collaboration with My 700 Project, Newark High School's freshman success program, A Call to College directly serves 9th graders with interactive, hands-on classes focused on academic choice, engagement and college knowledge. With the idea that the choices they make will write their story.
