About A CALL TO COLLEGE Every year many academically qualified students who should attend college do not. Two of the biggest obstacles are the complexities of the financial aid process and the high cost of college. In response to this need, A CALL TO COLLEGE was established in 1991 for Newark High School students by NHS alumni with the support of the community and the Newark City School system. A CALL TO COLLEGE works closely with the NHS guidance department to remove these obstacles in three ways:
Students qualify for Last-Dollar grants after families have paid their share according to federal guidelines and all other financial aid has been utilized. These grants help close the gap between the cost of college and the family’s ability to pay.
Who is Eligible to Receive Assistance? All Newark High School juniors and seniors are encouraged to take advantage of the advising services offered by A CALL TO COLLEGE. To be considered for a Last-Dollar grant, students must graduate from NHS with a 2.5 or above grade point average, be a full-time college student at an accredited college, meet the required application and financial aid deadlines, and demonstrate a need for college funds according to the federal formula.
Why is A CALL TO COLLEGE Important? For our country to continue to prosper and grow, it must have a well-educated workforce. Moreover, in today’s high-tech economy, a highly skilled highly trained workforce is a necessity. For our young NHS graduates who aspire to share in the American dream, education beyond high school is critical. It is the single most powerful tool which determines the level of personal income.
What Some of Our Parents Say About A CALL TO COLLEGE “I would like to thank A CALL TO COLLEGE for the scholarship received by my daughter. We are a middle-income family sometimes struggling to make ends meet. Without scholarship programs like yours, it would be virtually impossible for my daughter to live her dream of going to college.” – parent of a student from the class of 1997 “Where do I start? If it were not for A CALL TO COLLEGE advisors, my son would not be attending Kent State this fall. The phone calls checking up on his progress, the notes, the information, always courteous and friendly…Thank you, A CALL TO COLLEGE!” - parent of a student from the class of 1998
Thanks to the vision and generosity of NHS alumni and friends, a permanent endowment has been established. Income from this endowment will help more NHS students attend college, now and in the future. Not only are gifts everlasting, but they multiply! With the help of A CALL TO COLLEGE, students receive an average of $13 from other financial aid sources for every $1 awarded from the endowment. In addition, our overhead is low. Office space is provided by a contract with the Newark City Schools, the staff is part-time and our advisors are trained volunteers. Since 1991, A CALL TO COLLEGE has assisted over 3,000 NHS graduates, awarded over $927,000 in Last-Dollar Grants to more than 1,000 students, and helped them secure over $8.5 million in additional financial aid.
College costs continue to grow. The number of students who qualify for Last-Dollar Grants also continues to grow. To ensure that we are able to keep our promise to help all qualified graduates of NHS have the opportunity to continue their education, our endowment needs to grow! Additional funds are urgently needed. Your gift will make a difference. Please send your contribution today. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and your gift is tax deductible.
